people out there! i need your help!

i am sick and tired of being slow. i need to accelerate. i’d like your advice.

radio lab did a whole show back in their first season about time, and how different animals experience time differently. like hummingbirds and whales are on two totally different times. whales just take a a longer time to do stuff because their heart beat is way slow / takes longer to actually beat (they are huge!). i was amidst my thesis when i heard this piece (listen to them all here http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/?gclid=CNjv9tfE044CFSNFgQodHBiC5w) and it rocked my world. finally i understood what was wrong with me and why i seemed to take forever to do things it took others mere seconds to complete. awesome! whale time! but bummer as well… the rest of the world certainly does not operate on whale time. dig?

the reason i raise this nonsense, aside from finding some excuse to direct you to the awesomeness that is radiolab (science!) is i need your advice. i need some tips from you.

how can i use my time better?

how can i kick whale time?

i see others around me on what seems to be hummingbird, or seahorse time and i’ve got to say this killer whale gets a little discouraged and depressed. i know i should probably not take it to heart so much, but how?

steps taken thus far: i got a date book and i am making lists, but the days still seem to escape (or like monica says excape) me.

advice and pointers and tips from everyone? yes!

help. please. because whale time is just fine till you got lots of shit you want/ need to do…
accomplishment now!

i am not closed off to the idea of a lobotomy.

also: new music obessions? fallen in love with anything recently? tip me off!

    i know, i know…
i wish i had something for you…i wish i had something for myself…
there is another kind of time that i know of. it is camp time. it’s this weird thing that happens at camp where every minute camp time equals 6 minutes life time, so even though you’re only at camp for two months, it’s like a year, and so many things can happen in a day that take weeks in real life. and still, it’s all over too quickly. no matter how whalish or campy time may be, you cannot stop it from moving.
im trying to think of what made camp time so “productive” in the sense that so much happened in a day. well, for one, we woke up very early, like 8. the days were actually longer. is this totally out? some artists say their most productive hours are the early morning ones. do you think you could do it?
other things…demarcated timelines, schedules, schedules, schedules. plan out your day by the hour and stick to it. allow for food and bathroom breaks, etc.
exercise. that’s good. it makes more time for you, somehow. it gets your brain moving faster. run with us. i promise, i’m the slowest.
and lastly, people. i think it would be nice to have studio hours together, maybe if we could get the shed situation together or something. i worked so well in communal studios in college– it was reinforcing to have people working all around me.
    any of this sound good?

I think that it’s just the curse of being quality oriented. When you do something you do it well. Others seem to get more done but never do an outstanding job with anything, just so so. Don’t sweat it. We need more perfection and less mediocracy in this world!

    Save the whales!

chad vangaalen “infiniheart” is my new fave album. charlotte gainsbourg’s new album with air runs a close second.

you should read Oliver Sack’s “An Anthropologist On Mars: Seven Paradoxical Tales”. one of the stories is about this surgeon who has tourette’s syndrome and it talks a lot about how his perception of time is greatly accelerated in comparison with other people. pretty cool.
