i am letting you into my inner circle - or- this one is for alex

July 11th, 2007 by derya

so all y’all know that i am obsessed with kitties, movies, modern furniture and lighting, sparkly and shiny things, push up bras, brunch, bloody marys, james spader, the 1970’s, and yarn, but only a select few know (and fewer understand) my deepest darkest obsession. i felt it would be appropriate to fess up today seeing as i sat in on the science cafe at hub-bub this evening. this installment was a very interesting presentation on how the media shapes us as citizens (watered down descrip). thought a lot about conventions, what people respond to, and if archetypes can really ever be broken through ( i’m not totally sold, though examples proving me wrong are totes welcome)

after driving to barnes and noble and texaco for strawberry shortcake bars i received an email from genius leaguer alex that also persuaded me to post this former tip top secret love. (just like i told y’all i fall off my bike all the time, i am also an expert at being secretly in love… believe me when i say it’s true)

derya’s most beloved 1980’s news anchors from the greater boston area

(truth be told most of them are still employed or around…)

anyway where to start? with natalie jacobson who retired today after 35 years on the air? ok!

wcvb channel five

natalie jacobson co- anchor

nataliejacobson.jpg

ms. jacobson was pretty awesome. great to see a brunette on tv every night! (alex! i totally believe the mtm/ nat connection! so awesome! no wonder we love them so!)

how cute! she was married to her co- anchor

chet curtis

btp_20060324_weeks_c.jpg

and they had a daughter around my age. it was a big deal when they announced their divorce on the air way back when like 1996? (sara blames the breakup on chets wandering eye, something i can’t bring myself to belive) they continued to co anchor the news and work on the news magazine chronicle together apres divorce… ballsy and chic…

the weather man for channel five is of course the myth, the man, the legend

dick albert!

dickalbert.jpg

(photo courtesy of alex’s amazing birthday mix, big dip= 25 duh!)

i wanted to save him for last because he is THE BEST but he fit with the other channel fivers…

so dick albert i might love you best.

born on leap year so technically he is only like 12 years old (awesome magic!)

and

my dad got him to autograph a really beautiful map of massachusetts for me way back in the day.

i framed the map and hung it in my apartment for years, last year leaving it to christina. i am hoping it’s in her van on it’s way down here so i can hang it loud and proud in my studio…

but what did he autograph on the back you ask?

“derya,

may all your days be sunny.

love dick albert”

and then he drew the sun shining out from behind a rain cloud

A W E S O M E M A G I C F O R S U R E

so he is the best by far

let’s switch stations

WBZ channel four

so channel four also had a male/ female news team

jack williams co- anchor

lg.jpg

he ran the tuesdays’ child segment on adoptable kids in the boston area,

and how awesome they were. making him pretty awesome. he would hang out with them

and ask them what they were into every tuesday (natch)

liz walker co- anchor

i wanted to be her she was so chic and smart!

i remember sitting at babes for breakfast when i was three, with my dad, eating pancakes because i wouldn’t touch eggs, and playing “news show” and telling him that i would be liz walker and he could be channel four’s sportscaster

bob lobell

gal-vas2001-lobel-b.jpg

dude! no one covered the bruins like him!

btp_20050520_fuzzy_c.jpg

this is what we must have looked like.

bob and liz having fun at babes

(big ups north truro!!!!!!)

.

the chicest and perhaps the most nationally recognized of the entire crew is

joyce kulhawik arts and entertainment reporter

lg-1.jpg

(ain’t she a fox!)

joyce was made famous by those two dudes screaming out her name backstage at the oscars after winning for that movie i am embarrassed to like so much ( but that shot of him riding the t is SO spot on!)
to keep on the embarrassing track- before i could read i thought her first name was joycle and her last name was haywick. yeah sad and silly i know.

anyway these are the real loves of my life and i don’t care who knows anymore!

big ups wbz and wcvb! bigs up to natalie for a brilliant career! big ups to alex who is maybe the only one who understands!

song of the day? MARY TYLER MOORE THEME SONG BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

stay classy sparklecity.

ps: happy birthday ezra! happy birthday burak!

    Hi there,

I just happened to stumble across your blog. You might already know these things, but if not, FYI.

Jack Williams still does Wednesday’s Child every Wednesday - not Tuesday - and does a great job of helping kids to find loving families. Also, he anchors the 6 & 11 pm news on CBS4 Boston. Liz has her own show on Sundays. “Sundays With Liz”.

    Best wishes to you,

    Patsy

    Derya,

You know I also harbor love for Natalie, Chet, Dick, Jack, Liz, Bob, and Joyce! I took the Nat/Chet divorce really hard- it’s not so much that I distrust Chet, it’s just that before they announced the divorce Natalie started going on “special assignment” a lot, and suddenly Chet was co-anchoring with a younger brunette (who was that? can’t remember right now). So I guess I blame the brunette, not Chet. Either way, much love to Boston-area newscasters…NYC news just isn’t the same.

P.S.- do you remember that brassy blond Susan Wornick? She got fired a bunch of times and kept getting her job back somehow.

    Hilarious!
